"Wow - what a canyon. Starting in lush green forest, then into high-walled narrow slots, and then a dramatic free-hanging drop into the ocean.

Introduction

From The Best Canyoning in Portugal:

This is one of the most impressive canyoning routes on the island, having two sections with distinct geological characteristics and a spectacular exit in a suspended rappel into the sea. In the beginning, the vegetation is abundant, but then you enter a narrow gorge excavated in soft volcanic rocks. The route ends above the sea next to the imposing Galo cave, revealing a crystalline blue sea when crossed by the light on the opposite side. Before starting the route, it is necessary to confirm the state of the sea and arrange transport by boat. As it is on the island's NE coast, the sea at the stream outlet may differ from that observed in Santa Cruz. There is a signal from mobile operators at the exit.

Approach

  • Beautiful downhill approach hike

  • Get ready to get salty!
