"Looking to get a late-season rappel fix. Lower falls has a surprisingly nice short narrows that no one seems to know about. (log in to submit report)

| Welcome! Canyons in the Pacific Northwest can be different from those you might be used to. Be ready for unlinked bolts, retrievable traverse lines, and challenging aquatic environments. For more on local practices, and the best way to get started in the region, check out the WCC Safety page.
- Unlinked Bolts - groups should be comfortable rigging unlinked bolts, either temporarily linking them for all but the last person, or using a passive redundancy method. Most importantly, if you find two bolts side by side that are unlinked, do not add webbing to them. Linking bolts designed to be unlinked will likely cause damage during seasonal floods.
- Traverse Lines - many canyons are rigged to allow traverse line access to an exposed anchor station. This should be done using self-belay or team belay techniques. Do not leave fixed lines in the canyons.
- Challenging Environments - the highly aquatic nature of PNW canyons can surprise many. Cold temperatures, slippery rocks, loud waterfalls, and strong currents all lead to unexpected problems. Do not underestimate the need for strong team work and technical proficiency. Belays are frequently not possible. Unattended gear will sink or float away. Sliding and jumping is the cause of most major injuries, so it's critical to effectively communicating water depth & submerged hazards.

Introduction[edit]
Not a major objective, but a very short and sweet little canyon close to Horsethief Butte. Creek can pack a punch during the spring run-off, but flow diminishes substantially heading into summer and should be safe for beginner practice. This area is frequently visited by tourists, so please do not leave anchors behind. It is easy to escape between the falls. Eightmile can be easily combined with Fivemile Creek just down the road. Nice spot for training beginners.
Creek is located close to Horsethief Butte - popular area to train for rock climbing.
Approach[edit]
Park at the Crawford Oaks trailhead. Hike up the obvious trail at the west end of the parking area. Road switchbacks and heads up to the top of the falls.
Descent[edit]
- R1: Eightmile Falls. 60ft off a tree set back DCR. Use caution as there's loose rock around the falls.
- R2: 30ft long low-angle ramp before dropping 20ft into a short narrows. Beware pendulum potential. Anchored off a tree at the top of the ramp.
Walk down the creek through the narrows. Ignore first obvious trail DCR as it leads to a sketchy traverse and take the second one instead. Return to trailhead.
Red tape[edit]
Washington State Discovery Pass required to park at the trailhead. Day passes can be purchased at the trailhead.

Background[edit]
Eightmile Creek sports a third short waterfall, but it's way down by the RR tracks just before it drops into the Columbia. Not really worth your time.
If the park's open and you have some extra time, check out the cool petroglyph exhibit down at Horsethief Lake.
