Introduction

This canyon is one of the classics in Guara. It has a little bit of everything, 8m jumps, rappels, siphons, etc. but is not particularly difficult.

Short and easy approach/exit make it VERY POPULAR for Sundays, before driving back home. So it is recommended to run it midweek or in the late afternoon, to avoid crowds.

  • Formiga Canyon in August
  • Approach

From the parking area cross the stream and begin walking up the obvious and well-travelled trail.

After some elevation gain this trail will bring you to some magnicent ruins. Put on your harness and helmet at the ruins. A series of metal cables will guide you across an exposed section of cliff. Clip your cowtails to these cables as you go, like a via ferrata.

  • The ruins. Harness up here.
  • Be careful not to knock down any rocks from this cliff, as they will fall into the canyon below and the people in the canyon.

  • On the cables across the cliff
  • After the cables cross the cliff they go down towards the canyon. Once they end, there is a mandatory 5-meter rappel to continue. Bolts are in place. After this rappel, suit up at the water. There may be dozens of tourists in guided groups here.

    Descent

Head downcanyon! You'll immediately find small jumps, slides and swims.

  • Clear water
  • The canyon will soon slot up. There are sevel small rappels up to 8 m. All have multiple, excellent bolts, and most can be jumped after scouting.

  • A rappel
  • There will likely be several boulders or logs in the slot which you'll have to climb up over from the water.

  • In one of the slot sections
  • Open section
  • The slot will open, then close again even deeper!

  • Rappel
  • Towards the end there is a very easy siphon, plenty wide and about a meter long.

  • Beautiful canyon
  • Exit

Leave the stream on canyon left at a very obvious point where there is a trail. There are no cliffs to scale on the exit; it's just a few steps to get back on the trail you used on the approach. Follow it 15 minutes back to your vehicle.

    Red tape

There may be a ranger in the parking lot in summer, trying to regulate parking. Despite this, there are no limitations or restrictions or permits, and rangers are happy to see responsible canyoneers enjoying the canyons.
