Introduction[edit]

Grand Galet is a stunt rappel followed by a "water party", as described in the French beta. If you have 3-4 hours and are in the St. Pierre area, it is highly recommended. The big waterfall rappel is unequalled in it's numerous unique falls spouting out of the 300 foot high cirque. The rappel can be done in one 260-foot rappel, but this is not recommended due to a sharp ledge on the rope and you miss a great opportunity to perform a zipline drop into a deep pool. The recommended method is to do the rap in 3-pitches. The first brings you down about 100 feet to another set of bolts. The 2nd pitch brings you down another 100 feet to a rocky sloping platform that houses the 3rd set of bolts, from which you will set up the top anchor for the guided rappel. The bottom anchor for the guided rappel is canyon left on the far side of the large pool at the bottom on an obvious refrigerator size boulder with bolts. The makes for a stunning guided rappel or posisble zipline. The zipline can be set up for a mid-way drop into the pool, but extreme care must be taken to drop into the deep end. Prior to the iconic falls, there is one 75-foot rappel into a deep and wide pit with a handline to get out the far end. After the iconic falls is where the "water party" begins. This involves a couple wide and deep pools with jumps to 20-feet. On weekends there can be dozens of swimmers and cliff jumpers and cheering and laughing. Thus the water party reference. In such a short canyon route, this route is packed.
