Introduction[edit]
Approach[edit]
The Drive: There are dips, sand and lots of rocks on the drive from Stovepipe Wells to the Parking point. There is a deep drainage dip at mile 4. There was even a sedan and other SUV-2WD at the parking area. A bit risky without the clearance/4WD so try to have a follow vehicle in case one of the vehicles gets stuck. It helps to have a real spare tire and check it is good before the drive. Death Valley dirt roads are notorious for causing tire damage. As of Jan. 1, 2018 the deep sand will require AWD. High Clearance alone won't save you.
Descent[edit]
R1 - 20' dcl (you could try to downclimb on the right instead)
R2 30' + 25' 2 stage
There is a downclimb after rap 2 that looks sketchy, but it's fine if you stay high around the pool.
R3 25'
R4 30'
R5 30'
R6 20'
R7 30 pothole stem walk
R8 20'
There were some additional rappels (small) that exist when sand is washed away leaving the canyon floor deeper than safe for downclimbing. A tall agile person may feel fine to downclimb, or meat anchor everyone and the last person get's assists.
