Introduction[edit]

The upper section of Matacanes has a very different feel than the famous section that lies downstream. This is a more typical rappel-and-hike canyon, with a significant amount of boulder-hopping in-between drops. Marred too by a very long approach and exit, this canyon is nowhere near the same pay-to-play ratio of the other nearby canyons. The best part of the canyon is the two jumps at the very end.

Approach[edit]

It is possible to drive to the tiny town of Las Lagunillas that is at the top of the canyon, but from Potrero Redondo where you'll finish, it would be many many hours (3-4h each way, and you'd need to drive it three times total if going there once to start and then twice more to recover the vehicle afterward). So it is best to hike or rent horses from Potrero Redondo to get up and over the mountain pass, which has an elevation gain of 1000m to Las Lagunillas -- this is about a 4h hike. From Las Lagunillas it is about a 40 min hike downhill to the drainage confluence where you put on wetsuits.

Descent[edit]

  • Upper Matacanes outline (aka Picorete, Rumorosa)
  • Exit[edit]

The end of the canyon is at the 1st rappel of Matacanes proper, and from there it is a 1.5-2 hour walk back up the trail to Potrero Redondo.

You can rent a burro from Aldea Matacanes to carry packs back out for you from here.

    Red tape[edit]

Lifejackets are not required for this canyon, unlike they are in Matacanes & Chipitin.

    Beta sites[edit]

Contact Aldea Matacanes (link on Matacanes page) for information on hiring horses for riding or at least carrying packs up and over the mountain pass.

    Background[edit]

This canyon goes by several names -- La Rumorosa and Picorete are two other competing names. 'Rumorosa' is in disfavor because it is ambiguous with a nearby town of the same name. 'Picorete' is also used and is the nickname of one of the original descenders of the canyon (who tragically died later in a light airplane crash). But most people when discussing this canyon seem to refer to it by the un-ambiguous name of "Upper Matacanes".
