"6 hours for Forti, Pisson and Soffia is quite fast, 3h45 in the canyons, expect more time to do it.. Just less than 2h for the whole Soffia.

Introduction[edit]

This is one of the best canyons in the Dolomites, one of the best canyons in Europe too.

For a big day, consider combining with Forti and Pisson.

Approach[edit]

Follow a private paved road up the mountain and when reaching a fountain take the lower trail and traverse on an easy trail all the way to where it intersects the stream.

Descent[edit]

Soffia-Belluno-topo.jpg

The descent is long but fantastic, always changing and never boring.

The Canyoning in the Alps book has a topo of the canyon, but somehow is missing half of the rappels.

Exit[edit]

Keep going past the tourists and exit at the lake

Red tape[edit]

This canyon, like other in the Belluno National Park, are officially forbidden but are run even by commercial companies. Some books recommend to exit before the lake, but if you do so you may get harassed by the locals to pay entrance fee to see the waterfalls you just came down from. It's a better approach to swim out into the lake and swim around back to the parking lot, loosing the eager curious tourists along the way.

NOTE: As of 2016, the road up the mountain is private and access forbidden. However, it's not gated, so one may be able to drive up to unload people and packs and then come back down to park at the edge of the lake within 10 minutes. Do NOT park up the private road, the fine is 106Euro (as of 2016) and the rangers go by every day.
