BFK
How to tie[edit]
- Double back an arm's length of rope at the end.
- Fold the rope back on itself again.
- Tie an overhand with the four strands.
When to use[edit]
Also known as the BHK ("Big Honking Knot"). Common in PNW canyoning as a stopper knot, nominally because it is hard to rappel over with a standard canyoneering descender. Tie this knot at the end of the rope once looping through the bottom of the bag. Ensure that this knot is tied in any situation someone may rappel off the end of a rope: before conducting a traverse or descending to the bottom of a pitch where the anchor manager cannot see the end of the rope. Ensure that this knot is untied before descending to the bottom of a pitch with a hydraulic or fast-flowing water.
Potentially useful as an anchor knot in caving. Use caution. https://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?threads/big-fat-knot.14636/
Cautions[edit]
Do not assume that someone has tied a stopper knot to the end of a rope. Check first.
