Introduction[edit]

A sweet canyon with 6-7 abseils, one being an optional 4m jump into a slot (clear in October 2025). The short central section is impressive and unescapable. There are a few cool slides as well (sometimes blocked by debris).

Approach[edit]

The 4wd track up Deadhorse mountain road is often blocked by fallen trees and overgrown with lantana (take a hedgetrimmer and help keep the road clear). Channels eroded by waterflow on some uphill parts are getting deeper. It is also generally boggy and greasy after rain, can take several weeks to dry out. Fun on off-road ebikes, about 9km through Donaldson State Forest, otherwise a long walk each way.

Descent[edit]

  • XPICX
  • Exit[edit]

Hop about 50m downstream from the last pool. After a scungy gully CR, go steeply up 5m to the ridge. Then follow the path of least resistance through saplings up to the road.

Or continue downstream until you meet a creek confluence. Just upstream in the other branch there is a ford were you can also join the road and walk back up the hill.

    Red tape[edit]

Preferably known as Stagshead canyon. QPWS are intending to restrict access to the Burnett creek system
