Introduction[edit]

Val del Burt is located in an extremly rugged and difficult to access environment at Lago del Mis (near Belluno) in Veneto region. The canyon is long, wild, very steep and sometimes very narrow resembling Fogare superiore, Mus and Clusa. The water color is the same famous green like the creeks in the area. In the canyon you will found a lot of rappels , some low jumps and one dark section. The approach is very long, wild and tricky at the end. Val del Burt might be one of the best recent discoveries of the last few years in the Belluno area and it offers you a real adventure.

Approach[edit]

In Belluno take the road to Agordo and in Ponte Mas turn left for Mis. From Mis follow the signs for Lago del Mis and after the fourth tunnel (galeria Falcina) park your car on the large parking lot on the right side of the road. On the left side is the bar and area for campers and on the right is the lake (Lago del Mis).

On the left side of the bar is the start of the marked track Sentiero didattico naturalistico Val Falcina. Take this track and follow it to the valley. After about 15min of climbing you cross two creekbeds. Ascend some more and turn right just when the path becomes level again (N 46.1626809 E 12.0492249). Follow the path which ascends a forested ridge. The path is sometimes overgrown, but its foundation is always easily visible. At the first crossing stay right, at the second crossing stay left. A long ascending traverse leads you to a dry creekbed. Go up a few meters in the creekbed until you reach a stone cairn which shows you the spot to continue the ascending traverse to the left. Below a big rockface there is a faint trail to the left marked by two orange dots, which might be the emergency exit. Continue on the switchbacks to the right and climb to the bottom of the rockface where you reach a shallow overhang used by hunters for a resting place. Cross the creekbed to the left and continue the traverse high above the valley floor. After crossing another dry creekbed you reach a bigger tributary. Cross this creek and continue for another 50m or so. Here the path you have been following so far goes straight up the mountain. Turn left into a cut lane in the dwarf pines (N 46.1651739, E 12.0286065). This path is very hard to see, only frequent cuttings on branches, a few marking tapes and stone cairns help you find the right way. First traverse horizontally then go down about 20 height meters through a slippery gully before you can traverse to the right again. After a long mostly horizontal crossing you reach a pool beneath a nice little waterfall. Climb up on the opposite side of the waterfall and traverse below the walls into the valley floor. You reach the canyon below a little gorge with some bigger waterfalls. Don't try to descend into the canyon too early, it get narrow with steep walls very soon. Orientation is much harder than for example in Fogare sup.
