Introduction[edit]

A bit touristy but well worth a visit. The boat ride through caiman infested waters is the main attraction.

Supposedly there are some good caves there, as well as one you can get a boat to drop you off at, then climb up to.

Approach[edit]

From Tuxtla Gutierrez you can drive around the rim of the Sumidero Canyon and reach several lookout locations that sport amazing views as the river almost a kilometer down.

Chiapas de Corzo is one of the 3 boarding points to cach little boats to navigate the canyon and to reach the eco-park in the middle of the Sumidero Canyon traveling the Grijalva river. The morish kiosk Queen's Crown is the mostly recognized landmark of Chiapa de Corzo and a obliged visit if you are in town.

Descent[edit]

The boat ride starts at Chiapa de Corzo, at around 10 am departs a boat that charges about $180 pesos per person, it lasts about 2 hrs in the full sun (so dress appropriately) it usually is narrated in spanish, but if you don't speak the language is ok, the scenery will do all the talking...

Be prepared to take a lot of amazing pictures since this is a natural wonder, and ask the boat rider to take you under the "arbol de navidad" to get a refreshing shower and to spot the famous river crocodiles.

This is a great way to start you lazy day at Chiapa de Corzo, before or after the boat ride you can eat at any of the "malecon" restaurants, the "agua de coco" (coconut water) can be prepared with limon y sal (lime and salt) and they'll also prepare the actual coconut in the shell, all included in the price!
