Introduction[edit]

Another great canyon on the westside of LA that could be done in relatively quick order and combined with additional canyons in the area or exploring the beach/westside! Unlike the charming canyons next door which drain into the Santa Ynez creek area, this canyon drops precipitously over a short distance with 4 fun rappels and tons of down climbs. The money rappel was a 150 foot drop down a beautiful dry waterfall.

We ended up walking up Topanga creek at the bottom of the Canyon to the gully up Under Construction canyon! Walking along topanga creek was a great adventure.

Approach[edit]

Leave a shuttle car at the exit on Topanga Canyon Rd. I think we left our shuttle here (34.05987, -118.58436).

Drive the shuttle to the paseo miramar trail (34.05084, -118.55705). You CANT park at the actual trail head so park a little down hill from where the actual trail starts. We parked at (34.04709, -118.55762), no parking above the 600 block and read signs carefully. Could also be approached from Los Leones trail as parking is limited in the hills up by the paseo mira mar trail. The two trails intersect here (34.05315, -118.55748).

Continue up the fire road until you get to an intersection at (34.06594, -118.57475). You get the first look at the canyon you'll be descending in front of you. Follow the trail right until you arrive at the drop in point (34.06745, -118.57819).

Descent[edit]

Angle your way down into the gully (34.06629, -118.57800) which will lead you into the canyon proper (34.06564, -118.57809). Once in the canyon you'll encounter fun down climbs and charming little water falls on your way to R1. The hiking in between down climbs was like being on a trail! It should be noted the was descended after the fires and heavy rains which likely cleaned the canyon out for us.

R1: 25 feet - charming waterfall with some moss and a little flow (ghosted off some bushes/trees)

Walk down canyon which continues to be easy going. On the way to the next rap we encountered one notable dry waterfall which was a fun down climb!

R2: 55 feet - Low angle three tiered waterfall, only rappelled down the first two tiers (35 feet) and down climbed the last. (ghosted off some bushes/trees)

Almost immediately down canyon you'll encounter the next rap.

R3: 40 feet - stunning drop that goes down an awesome feature with a short overhang! (ghosted off some bushes/trees)

Right after R3 you'll come to the money rappel!

R4: 150 feet - dry waterfall with beautiful rock formations the entire way down! Wide enough where it it looks like a cliff face, but clear evidence that this would flow with more water (ghosted off some bushes/trees)

More fun lies ahead from here! Downclimb your way through the rest of the canyon through a series of fun obstacles that drop you out onto Topanga canyon Blvd.

Exit[edit]

Quick walk down the road to the shuttle car from here!
