Many canyoneering descenders evolved from the figure-8. These armed figure-8 variants generally provide friction adjustments both pre-rappel, and on the fly as a rappeler requires.
What is not being compared[edit]
Many other devices are used in canyons, canyoneers with training or background in climbing often use tube style belay devices (e.g. ATC). Canyoneers familiar with caving may use brake bar racks or bobin style devices. This page acknowledges that both racks and ATCs have a valid place in canyoneering (e.g. very long rappels, and ultralight canyoneering respectively) however they will not be considered for comparison on this page because this diverges from the spirit of the page. For comparison, a Black Diamond ATC-XP weighs 64g.
