Introduction[edit]
A beautiful wide-granite canyon with two main routes Superior (upper) and Inferior (lower) that can be linked for one full day. Each independently are time-grade III but together IV.
Getting Here[edit]
To get to San Carlos from Medellin a bus (3.5 hrs) leaves pretty much every hour from either Coonorte and Transoriente in either direction .
Approach[edit]
Inferior[edit]
From the road you hike up through some farms through a couple barbed wire fences. There were 2-3 signs about the cascade that were seen, I don't remember where. Once you reach the river there is a sign and a thin trail on the climbers-left of the river up steep roots for 1,400ft of elevation. Here, the river is more open and horizontal and is easy to gear-up.
Descent[edit]
Inferior[edit]
Move from anchor-to-anchor down many 100+ ft rappels often near but not always within the flow of water. Most anchors are two moderately rusted, decent condition, not spinning steel bolts (Jan 2024). There was one stainless steel bolt on the route.
This topo was here before the page was updated for Inferior details so I'm keeping it. I don't know what route this topo is for, but it doesn't look like Inferior:
Exit[edit]
You end where you started up the small, steep forest trail. Hike back to car.
Red tape[edit]
En el pueblo existe una regulación vigente acerca de la contratación de guías locales y el pago a los locales para el acceso al cañón. Si no se contrata guía local, la policía y oficina de turismo de la alcaldía pueden pararte y no permitir el acceso al cañón.
Beta sites[edit]
Heavily consider using Eco Guías Colombia as they know what they are doing and have equipment if you don't want to trek it around Colombia. They guide this canyon for experienced people and several other canyons in the San Carlos Area. These are their videos of Superior and Inferior. I don't think this is commonly guided, we were the only ones there when we went with them.
Trip reports and media[edit]
Background[edit]
In Jan 2024 there was some sort of military flag on a building we walked past. I don't really know what was up with it, maybe another reason to go with a local guide who understands what's going on in the region.
