Introduction

Approach

The canyon can be done as a loop starting from the bottom (passenger vehicle accessible) or from the top (high clearance vehicle required). It can also be completed with a shuttle using two high clearance vehicles.

The KML track defines the loop approach starting from the 89A. Park at the first switchback and either hike to the rim via Sterling Canyon or cross the drainage and take a slightly faster and more direct route up a class 4 ridgeline.

Reference On Rope Canyoneering for shuttle approach details.

Descent

R1: 45’ off tree high RDC.

R2: 40’ off tree LDC.

R3: 20’ off rock pinch.

R4: 70’ off tree RDC.

R5: 25’ off rock pinch.

R6: 85’ off tree LDC.

R7: 25’ off rock pinch.

R8: 50’ off large tree.

R9: 25’ off crack pipe, or combine with R10 for 80’.

R10: 25’ off rock pinch.

R11: 80’ off bolts.

R12: 70’ off bolts into deep pool. Multiple trees provide opportunity for the first person down to set up a guided rappel for the remainder of the group; though you can also set up a guided rappel off your harness as the force generated is relatively low.

If exiting Sterling Canyon to the 89A:

R13: 15’ rappel off tree LDC or moderate downclimb.
