Cuba is a frontier for canyoneering and canyoning. Has user description More information

Has user description  Cuba is a frontier for canyoneering and canyoning. The island is blessed with deep jungles, rugged terrain, ample rainfall, limestone regions, and plenty of streams and waterfalls. Nearby islands with similar geology and climate, such as the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, have yielded great canyons, so there's confidence that Cuba, too, must have hidden canyons awaiting exploration.

However, as of 2026, there has been little to no documented exploration in Cuba for canyons. If anyone has explored, it's not on the internet.

Perhaps the greatest potential for canyons in Cuba is the area surrounding the town of Topes de Collante. This area sports plentiful travertine falls and at least one 'canyon tour' appears on the internet, showing a photo of a bolt and rappeler. It's unclear if this is a canyon - committing, with multiple rappels - or simply a rappel for tourists. However, the area clearly has plenty of narrow gorges, flowing streams, and eager locals that will show around an eager canyon explorer. Reaching out to locals, such as via a Facebook group such as 'Amantes de Topes de Collantes', would be a great place to start.

The dry season - January to April - is probably the best time to visit Cuba for canyons. Notably, as of 2026, drones are not allowed, so any exploration will be challenging. Come with plenty of gear, patience, and there are likely some world class routes awaiting.
