Background[edit]

Oct 2014. Camped at Reyes Peak Campground Friday night. Starred hiking at 6:50am. 2 hours to get to the drop in, approx. 4 miles. The "First Descent" portion (Middle West Branch) had 3 rappels including a rappel through a hole in the roof of a kind of cave created by a bunch of chockstones and debris, pretty interesting and unique rappel. There were a total of 8 rappels, getting wetter as we got lower. Really nice canyon and great rappels. After the last waterfall we came across some black tubing that looked pretty new. Then we found the top of the tubing which was actively sucking in water. We bailed and climbed out via a Western tributary, up and across a ridge and down into Potrero John through an unnamed tributary (Had one interesting 50' rappel in here). We got back to the car as it got dark. 12 hours total. -Alden
