While the backpacking climate is ultralight, canyoneers are more about utility and practicality.

If you were an impossibly badass dude (or chick), and there were no special obstacles, then you'd want:

  • sticky shoes
  • webbing
  • carabiner

You can go ultralight at the expense of many things, mainly safety.

  • You'll probably be unable to rescue your friends.
  • You'll probably be unable to rescue yourself.
  • You'll probably be unable to retrieve a stuck rope.
  • You might get Giardia from drinking the canyon water.
