Morocco has a desert geography somewhat similar to the southwestern US. While the slots here are generally not so tight, there are neat features like potholes, bridges, arches and fantastic palm oases. Many canyons here flow in the winter/spring, and then are dry the rest of the year. There are a couple great canyons in the north, and a few excellent ones near Tafroute. There are also many mediocre canyons.
Rent a car. Regional guides may tell you you will never find the canyon without a guide, but remember that Moroccans, though friendly, consistently see tourists as a pack of dollars with legs. With good beta, you can easily do routes here independently. The country is completely safe and welcoming to canyoneers and visitors.
