Introduction[edit]

A classic route just outside of Monterrey. Called the "Eagle's Nest", it involves some short via ferrata cables along the top ridge on a surprisingly spicy section, followed by rappelling into the tunnel/cave of this route with great views of Monterrey.

There is a new divided highway installed right at the start of the trail. However there are 3 large tunnels built here under the highway. Access this route by driving on the original road to the north of the divided highway, parking your car, and walking under the highway to the trail. Beware of car break-ins in this area.

Approach[edit]

There is a hike up a well established trail to the start of a 'lollipop' loop for rappelling into the cave.

Descent[edit]

Once you have traversed the ridge you will reach a wire cable looped around a rock as well as a couple of bolts with equalized chain. Here you have two options; you can abseil off either side of the limestone fin. On the side you approached from (Santa Catriana) the drop is 35m but has some dirt and loose rock, while the Huasteca side has clean rock and is 30m (note: from the chain anchor this side is also 35m). Both sides bring you to the 'nest', which looks like the remnants of a phreatic cutting through the rock. The second pitch out of the nest is also about 30m, though you can downclimb the bottom bit. Two optional pitches follow. If you choose to scramble / down climb there are some fun elevator style drops.

Exit[edit]

Continue down the scree chute soon reaching the junction you were at on the way up. Reverse the route you took up.
