Quantitative Precipitation Forecast

The Probability of Precipitation (POP) tells us the likelihood that a measurable amount of precipitation will occur, but not how much may fall--only that at least 0.01 inches or more could occur. To understand the predicted rainfall amounts a Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (QPF) is necessary to addresses that gap.

A QPF estimates the total liquid-equivalent precipitation (rain, snow, or other forms converted to water) expected over a defined time and area. It answers a different question than POP. POP gives the chance of precipitation; QPF gives the expected volume.
