The bare minimum canyoneering gear

Each canyon is different with different obstacles. In the San Gabriel Mountains, in a short canyon with no particularly interesting problems, the following should suffice.

• static rope
• harness
• descender (which could be a carabiner)
• helmet
• hiking shoes with good traction
• safety tether
• food
• water
