If planning to go to Vancouver Island you should plan to spend at least 5 days there, as the ferry is quite expensive (especially in summer) and it takes time to drive around the island (as distances are great and highways scarce).
When to go
The summer is usually the best time to visit, it's when the weather is most stable. Heavy rains in Spring and Fall may make canyons and caves flood, forest roads impassable and inflict great misery on backpackers.
