Introduction
This is a non technical canyon with some exposed climbing and stemming involved. Good partner assisting may be necessary and the use of a handline could also be helpful for some. This is a great way to get a nice day of variation by going down Red Velvet, exiting Black Cat, Going back down Blue Velvet and exit AZ hot springs in a fun day.
Approach
Approach is the standard approach to the Velvets, and Black Dahlia but follow the main drainage into this canyon or use this canyon as a means to exit the river.
Descent
there are 5-6 spots where you will be down climbing. The last downclimb at the river is the most exposed. you can traverse canyon left and climb down or you can down climb down the drainage.
Exit
use this canyon as an exit or entry into the colorado river.
Red tape
no red tape. you must have a PFD and a watercraft that qualifies for seaworthy use per USCG. no bolts needed, if there ever is a handline used, have the best climber scale the climb and throw down a handline. This is a great scenic canyon to combine some spice to the day in the velvets.
