Introduction[edit]
A rugged Hellsgate Wilderness canyon. https://youtu.be/bjo6B_ruXnk
Approach[edit]
GPX file for approach is outdated, follow these instructions. Trail suitable for stock high clearance 4x4 with 4lo and offroad tires.
Turn off hwy 260 onto dirt, air down tires, take left at first major fork, continue down a bit and turn right before the power station. Enter the small fenced in field, (34.25918, -111.18369) open gate on left and cross river onto FR656. Drive down to Mud Spring where the trail turns, intersecting original GPX route. Follow rocky trail all the way up mountain. Leave 1 vehicle at exit and continue up to Neal Cabin and Butte Tank as marked on map, park here for approach.
Descent[edit]
R1: 70' off of tree in canyon into shallow pool.
Downclimb RDC.
R2: 80' off of rock pinch.
Come to confluence with another incoming canyon.
Follow canyon down about 500'.
R3: 80' two tier off of rock pinch RDC back from drop. First tier drops 30' into a swimmer pool. Swim across LDC to continue down second tier 25' into another swimmer pool that is possible to bypass LDC. Be mindful of rope placement as it bends LDC around.
R4: 90' sloping rappel off of rock pinch LDC back from drop. Immediately follows after R3. Actual drop is about 50', but best possible anchor is about 40' back from drop.
Follow canyon down about 100'.
R5: 55' off of rock pinch back from drop. Drops into shallow pool.
At minor drop, down climb LDC.
Follow canyon down about 1500'.
R6: 85' off of rock pinch RDC back from drop. Drop starts out sloped, but then drops about 15' to ledge before large pool.
Handline or climb down ledge LDC into larger swimmer pool. Swim across pool to opposite side with a cool cave LDC.
R7: 100' off of tree up from drop LDC.
Follow canyon down 300' through deep pool to exit canyon.
Exit[edit]
Exit canyon comes into Brush Corral Canyon from LDC. Head up exit canyon bypassing immediate dryfall going LUC. Head up canyon about 1500' where it runs into a drop in the canyon. Head out of the canyon RUC up loose scree rock to gain ridge. Follow ridge about one mile as is it continues gradually up to large hill. Head up large hill about 200', then contour around left following game trails until it meets road 893. Take road right (north-east) back the way you came on approach.
