Introduction[edit]

This beautiful canyon was found by Brad Marshall and Curtis Raulerson many years ago. It's a hidden gem in the Sheep Range Mountains. They have shown a number of people the route, but never got around to documenting it. With their permission, I am adding it to the data base for everyone's enjoyment.

Approach[edit]

The approach is a gradual river bed hike leading to the Joe May Canyon where you will turn and hike to the Joe May Guzzler. The terrain gets a little steeper after the Guzzler. You will see a saddle at the end of the canyon that you need to scramble up to. Traverse and climb gradually. From there...it's all down hill...except for a little elevation gain on the exit hike.

Descent[edit]

You will hike off of the high point saddle of the approach and follow the drainage on the other side. There are a couple of small, smooth waterfalls leading up to the first rappel, but nothing that can't be down climbed.

R1 30' ghosted off of a tree

R2 210' cairn anchor NOTE: If you are planning on belaying R2 use a 70m+ rope or add to the bottom. DO NOT stand below the wall to belay. Possible rock fall

Between R2 and R3 there is a fair amount of scrambling. At one point you will come to a drop that can be down climbed through a rabbit hole LDC

R3 30' ghosted off of a tree

R4 85' off of boulder

Between R4 and R5 you will again come to a drop that can be down climbed through one of two small (packs off) rabbit holes accessed LDC

R5 70' pinch anchor....TWO stage

R6 35' Carin anchor

R7 65' pinch anchor 20+ feet behind rappel

R8 45' off of boulder

Exit[edit]

After the last rap hike the river bed out to the point where the terrain on your left drops and you can easily climb out the 10-15' rise up on to the desert. If you are using GPS, point your device towards your vehicle (which you can't see) and hike the straightest, least undulating route that you can find. The track provided has worked well. The exit is FULL SUN exposure. Be cautious of the afternoon temps. Have fun! Be safe!
