Introduction

Hidden among the granite of the Linas Massif, the Canale De Urgua is a right-bank tributary of the Rio Gutturu Fenugu, developing along the north side of Punta Perda de Sa Mesa. Spotted several times along the dirt track leading to Togoro and Case Linas, especially when water flow was highest, it caught our curiosity enough to warrant an exploration of its own. The canyon rewarded us with a fine series of rappels, natural slides and chutes, capped off by a final 26-metre waterfall. The approach is a pleasant walk through woodland, finishing on a scenic mule track that follows the canyon's right bank.

Approach

From the village of Gonnosfanadiga, head towards the Church of Santa Severa, then take the dirt road towards Togoro.

Descent

Entering the streambed, the canyon soon opens into a long sequence of drops and slides — some on natural anchors, others bolted — interspersed with small pools, playful chutes and a few short downclimbable sections. Roughly midway, the terrain steepens sharply into a slippery stretch that leads into a particularly long double drop, split into two pitches to reduce rope friction. Further down, a series of cascades collects into a fine pool, followed by more slides and drops through increasingly narrow, vegetated terrain (gardening shears recommended). The canyon's final, well-known cascades are visible from the dirt track to Togoro, easily spotted on the left after the switchbacks. A short, gently sloped stretch — close enough to vegetation to allow self-belaying if needed — brings the route to its last two drops before reaching the confluence with the Gutturu Fenugu. From there, it's just a few metres to the mule track used on the approach, which leads back out in the opposite direction.

Exit

Continue along the streambed, past a few pools, until you reach the final stretch of the mule track you followed on the way in.
