Canyonmag.net copyright claim
Summary[edit]
On September 11, 2018, Phillip Mills of Canyon Magazine requested that 20 Japanese canyon pages be removed from RopeWiki. These pages consisted solely of the title, a few summary statistics about the canyon, and a link to a canyonmag.net page. Under US copyright law, Phillip's claim appears to be entirely baseless since titles cannot be copyrighted and facts about the natural world cannot be copyrighted, but Phillip asserted that Japanese copyright law should be applied, and that it covered both the names of the canyons and numerical statistics about the canyons. Because we cannot reliably assess the validity of that claim (though we're very skeptical since RopeWiki servers reside in the US), we chose to comply with the request.
If you have any independent knowledge of these canyons, we would appreciate the creation of new pages for these canyons that do not use Phillip's names for the canyons, nor any of the database information from canyonmag.net. In lieu of linking directly to canyonmag.net, please link to this page so readers may determine whether or not they want to support canyonmag.net with their patronage.
Feel free to contact User:Bjp for more information on this topic. Should you wish to discuss the matter with Phillip, his email is [email protected], but remove the capital letters and numbers to prove you are not a spambot.
Page description[edit]
All pages removed consisted exclusively of the information shown below, with allegedly-copyrighted material replaced with XXX:
Title: XXX
{{Canyon |Coordinates=XXX |Vertical rating=XXX |Aquatic rating=XXX |Commitment rating=XXX |Region=XXX |Length=XXX |Depth=XXX }} ==Introduction== ==Approach== ==Descent== ==Exit== ==Red tape== ==Beta sites== * [[File:rwl_en.png|alt=|link=]][http://canyonmag.net/database/XXX CanyonMag.net] : XXX ==Trip reports and media== ==Background==
That is the full extent of all of the pages deleted. They were added by Luca in early 2017 as stubs to allow RopeWiki users to leverage the power of RopeWiki searches to discover the canyonmag pages; essentially indexing them for search. This is another reason why we are very skeptical about Phillip's claims, but we do not feel sufficiently confident about Japanese and international law to pursue vindication.
