Introduction[edit]

This is a fun romp or a frustrating route finding slide for life depending if you find the right way down.

Approach[edit]

Drive to the trailhead in Spanish Fork Canyon. The start is around mile post 190 and on the left side as you drive up the canyon toward Price. This is a dirt road off Hwy 6. Make sure to latch the gate after you enter as there is livestock there often. Then drive to the end of the dirt road and you are at the trailhead. There are often people hear shooting guns into the rocks off the left side of the dirt trail. Follow the user trail from your parked car until there is a fork in the trail and go to the left. Once in the slot head up the canyon staying to the left until you get to a wide grassy bowl. There are quote a few trials that dead end going to the right. Once you see the grassy bowl you can go to the right where most people have gone but its two steps up and one slide back. The easier and less steep way is to go up the middle of the grassy bowl on the rocky path. This will lead you to the top of the ridge. Once on the ridge find the trail down into crumbling canyon. Be aware as you climb out and onto the ridge because you may or may not come out above the canyon. In general there are trees above the canyon and many fewer trees as you go up the ridge line.

Descent[edit]

The first rappel is just off the ridge and its off a tree. Its a little bit sketchy to get to the tree but once there its a somewhat flat spot. Just 80 feet below this is grotto rock since there is a grotto on the other side of the rock that you can't see. You want to go to the left of Grotto Rock. It is a great place to sit and have a drink or eat lunch. Then just to the left of Grotto Rock and barely up hill is a set of bolts to rappel off of. This is a 30 foot rappel with an overhang. Take the user trail to your right and down and up a gulley to another tree. This is the third rappel of approximately 50 feet. Now you are in the canyon. Work you way down the canyon and you will reach a constriction point. There is another set of bolts here but most people down climb this as there are lots of foot and hand holds. Keep going down the narrows and there are two more optional rappels. Again downclimbing this canyon is easy. Then you will come to a squeeze where you will crawl through and get to the last 60 foot rappel. This has a series of boulders stuck in the crack with holes by them. There is a anchored rope set up to clip into so you don't accidently fall into the gaps. Then there is a 50 foot rappel followed by a short pleasant stroll back to you vehicle.
