Introduction[edit]
This canyon is described in comprehensive detail in Canyoning Around Victoria guidebook
Use the Buckland River Gauge on the BOM to judge the flow. <1.3m = low, 1.3-1.6m = high (this seems to be quite a large range and conservative though), >1.6m = flood.
If there has been any rain in the last month, then this is a serious swiftwater canyon. Most years there is at least one serious injury/death at this waterfall. It is illegal to leave the walking track to the base of the falls - NATIONAL PARKS REGULATIONS 2013 - REG 64.
Approach[edit]
Find a way to the top of the falls.
Descent[edit]
Canyon Topo[edit]
There is a great canyon topo in the Canyoning Around Victoria guidebook. Go buy it.
Tips[edit]
- Bring minimum 2x 50m of rope. The top of R6 is very cramped and only has room for 2 people, so add an extra 50m if the group is larger than this.
- 8 abseils, the longest is 45m.
- Most parties skip R1, as it is 100m upstream of the main face. (R1 is a thread on the large boulder)
- Most anchors are double bolted with two independent rings.
- R5 is on the TR parallel to a narrow crack, R6 is at a small ledge on the left where the waterfall opens up again.
- The last abseil (R8) is a 10mm thread. Bring 7-8mm accessory cord to replace it if required.
Exit[edit]
Avoid scrambling on steep slippery rock faces as you make your way back to the car.
Red tape[edit]
It is illegal to leave the walking track to the base of the falls - NATIONAL PARKS REGULATIONS 2013 - REG 64.
