Introduction[edit]

This is another training canyon developed for new canyoneers or those looking for a more low key day out (see note below). GPX/KML required for route-finding. BEWARE: CRYPTOBIOTIC SOIL everywhere after you “summit.” Do NOT step on it. Walk around or step on rocks instead.

Note (Feb 2026): Rappels are hard starts, and the approach is highly brushy. If proposed as a beginner canyon, keep in mind that the approach and rappel starts may turn most beginners away from future outings.

Approach[edit]

As you leave Hartwell Canyon, turn right into the side canyon that Fatty is located in, take the large side drainage right before the canyon. Hike north up this, about .7 miles until you see drainage split (it’s easy to miss so check your GPX/KML often), take this off-shoot all the way up until it ends and you see a path up right to the scramble sections. Follow KML until you reach the mesa. Watch for CRYPTO! Follow this along the rear edge until you reach the start of canyon.

Descent[edit]

R1: 40’ off of tree and is an optional practice rap for beginners, this can be bypassed easily as a down-climb

R2: 25’ off tree.

R3: 55’ off of bolts.

R4: 85’ from tree on canyon left.

Exit[edit]

Follow drainage out and down back to Hartwell.
