Introduction[edit]

Billabong Canyon is located out on the Newnes Plateau, near Gooches Crater and is a very easy canyon to get to and is ULTRA short, so short, it could be renamed "the 5 minute canyon"!

The only abseil (If you choose to abseil) is very narrow and once you start down the waterfall, very slippery as not many people must do the abseil.

Popular "hidden" spot on Instagram now, so, you may not have the place to yourself, it is a photogenic place at the right time of the day.

Approach[edit]

Walk to Goochs Crater, go left around the crater and over the rim down to the creek that feeds Billabong, follow downstream until you hit the narrow bit where it drops into the pool below.

Descent[edit]

You abseil into a reasonably deep first pool that at the right time of the day, is quite bright and lit up, then it is a short scramble / slide into the bottom pool, which is bigger, but much more enclosed above in a cavernous area.

This canyon is so short, you can leave your rope and walk the 7 minutes around and do it a few times.

Exit[edit]

Head out of the canyon, veer left and follow the well worn track that continues going up and left till you cross the hill and head back down to the creek, return the way you came back to your car.
