Introduction
The Eastern Arm of Tuckup, known as Hades Knoll Canyon, has a nice slot through the Redwall Limestone. It's a long hike, but suitable for those new to Grand Canyoneering, given that the technical challenges should be overcome without much effort or risk.
Approach
Most will approach from Schmutz Spring. Once in Tuckup wash, Dwentzel recommends that you "head down Tuckup canyon to the second drainage on the left (LDC) and climb up to the Tuckup route there". The Tuckup Trail is non-existent for the first few miles, you'll find various cairns at various levels up and down the slope but none help to converge the traffic/footsteps. Eventually, an obvious trail forms at 36.33770662388144, -112.87957940568626 as can be seen on the satelite imagery, passing through large fields of crypto. The trail can be followed to the head of Hades Knoll canyon with only a couple of short vague patches.
Descent
A few downclimbs in the Supai, a few rappels in the Redwall.
- Jboony says 5 rappels, up to max 50 feet
- Dwentzel says five rappels up to 40'
- Todd Martin guidebook says 2 rappels
- Richard Pattison rappelled 3 times
Exit
Walk up Tuckup with a couple of climbs in the Redwall Limestone past chockstones - difficulty is dependent on how much of the floor has been scoured away under the chockstones.
Red tape
Within Grand Canyon National Park. A permit is required at all times. For overnight stays the Use-Area is LB9 Boysag
Also, on the Kanab plateau, an America The Beautiful annual pass is required to enter the park boundary.
