"The group hated the second rappel. I setup a safety line for everyone to clip in to, but the exposure scared some of the group members. A few potholes

Introduction

A short an scenic canyon that is also quite popular and often guided due to the easy access and short approach and exit.

Approach

From the parking lot, cross the bridge and then follow the dirt trail that exits to the right off the paved sidewalk. Follow the trail as it turns left and crosses back over the stream, heading up the drainage, staying to the left and keeping an eye out for the occasional cairn until you reach the top of the ridge line. Drop into the next drainage and cross to the far side which will lead you down to the left and into Hogwarts for a magical experience.

Descent

R1: 40’ off tree in watercourse or bypass DCR.

R2: 45’ off boulder DCR.

R3: 60’ off rock pinch. This is the arch rappel. Mug for the camera and enjoy the scenery at the bottom. There are a couple of small potholes at the bottom that will need to be downclimbed or set the rope length longer to make it a multi-stage rappel

Between R3 and R4 is a small stemming section which can be tricky for shorter people as it widens out at the end at the highest part. This will then turn to the left and drop you into a narrow slot (high stemming can avoid the constriction) followed by an easy stem with a wide shelf for your feet.

R4: 80’ off solution pocket DCR. Alternate anchor is sometimes set off solution pocket DCL, but the DCR option gives a better rappel with a portion of it free-hanging

R5: 90’ off the "alligator" rock. While this rock has been used for quite some time, it is still a marginal anchor and should be inspected carefully. Backing it up can be tricky. The glue in bolts that were briefly in place have been cut. Patch job is still visible.

Exit

Exit the drainage to the north and cross over the stream, following the social trails or the road to the left and back to the parking lot. Try to spot the Moqui Queen in the large alcove to your left as you walk out.
