Introduction[edit]

Jibaro is one of my favorite canyons for this region. A beautiful canyon for a nice day on the river. Interesting lower narrow section and numerous rappels. This Canyon has natural anchorage with plenty of opportunity to build and rebuild anchorage. Do not place bolts in this or any other canyon in the region. It is illegal to place bolts and there is plenty of opportunities to build natural anchorage. Keep it that way.

Do not enter this canyon if you do not have the knowledge to entirely inspect and replace anchorage. Do not assume anchorage is prepared to hold any load bearing weight upon your arrival. Bring anchorage replacement material and be prepared to replace all anchorage. This canyon floods and becomes hot. The sunbaked and worn webbing can break. Inspect and Replace all anchorage.

Approach[edit]

Park at the AZ hotsprings parking lot and make your way down the wash. Navigate your way to the top and start heading down. There are two forks to Jibaro, the north fork is more scenic and has an additional 2 rappels including a 170 ft rappel. You can also access Jabroni canyon after these two rappels..

Descent[edit]

Beware potential sharp rock if rap poorly Looks steep at top- work down starting canyon R R1 35' rock pinch 10' chimney DC R2 90' 3 stage from wide rock horn Couple easy DCs R3 45' deadman (or bypass L) 10' moderate and 12' tricky DC (may want to rap) R4 50' deadman in bottom of drainage DC R5 50' deadman (webbing extended) or 90' if do not DC (2nd part nice 25' DC down chute) R6 50' deadman

Prepare water craft on a rock landing just above water level

Bring extra webbing and rapides to replace anchorage material.

Exit[edit]

Paddle down river about 1.5-2.5hrs. White Rock is just after the red 61MM sign (white fist sized rocks on a large flat area). Continue about 0.3mi to the Arizona Hot Springs beach (moderarley large obvious beach). Hike up past AZ hot springs and complete the loop back to your car at the AZ Hot spring trailhead.

Red tape[edit]

No permit is needed but you will need a USCG approved PFD and approved raft to float down the river to exit at AZ hot springs.

EVEN FURTHER JIBARO CANYON

Background[edit]

A local river guide brought this canyon to my attention after he would see "waterfalls" after raining. We were talking about the series "Love, Death, and Robots" and decided to call it "Jibaro". There are also signs of mining material along the way. I am sure there is another name for this canyon as someone will chime in but we do not know of any names for this canyon. It will be great to know more of its history.

First descended by Tyler Goodfellow and team in 2021

"This canyon was first named Full Throttle Canyon after its original technical exploration. The name originated from the sight of an NPS law enforcement ranger gunning their motorboat at full throttle downstream as we rappelled the last couple of drops."
