Introduction[edit]
Because the upper technical section is not accessible, this page is now providing information for the lower day hike only.
The permitted day-hike section is on BLM land, but the upper part of the canyon--the technical descent--is on private land in is not accessible.
The upper technical section was bolted but access to it is not legal legal in any manner. The entire approach has been fenced, gated and signed 'No Trespassing'; it is private land. The last party through got lost and needed rescue from Iron County SAR. The landowner has promised to prosecute any further groups. Please do not break the law by descending this canyon; it complicates relations and angers private landowners.
Route[edit]
The route is an out-and-back hike up an old road and through the watercourse to a turn around spot. The trail follows an old access road (0.8 miles) into the Hurricane Cliffs and enters the lower open section of the canyon. The trail crosses the stream several times along the road on the way to the falls. There used to be a ladder constructed of a log and metal rungs but that had been replaced with a custom made aluminum stair case. This allows passage up and down the falls. While the new aluminum staircase is safer than the old log ladder, the aluminum can be slippery when wet or icy so use care.
Red Tape[edit]
A day use permit is required to hike Kanarra Falls. Permits costs $12 per hiker, with no charge for children 3 years old and younger--though they still need a permit. Permits are non-transferable--meaning you can NOT resell your tickets online or in person--and may ONLY be used on the date for which they are purchased.
Permits can be obtained online at https://kanarrafalls.com and redeem at the on-site kiosk. Depending on availability, tickets may be purchased on-site at the kiosk. A credit or debit card is preferred when purchasing tickets at the kiosk. There is a daily quota of 150 spots per day and permits often sell out--especially in the summer months so advanced permit reservations are strongly recommended over relying on there being permits available via the on-site kiosk.
