Introduction[edit]

An interesting mini canyon by Tortilla Flat with a nice sequence of rappels and an approach and exit almost entirely on trail. Relative to brush, this may be one of the cleanest routes in the superstitions.

Someone in the group should have experience building and evaluating cairn and deadman anchors for this one.

Approach[edit]

Hike along Peter’s Canyon trail for 0.2 miles. Turn right at the sign for Fragile Arch. Follow this trail a short distance before branching off and traversing over to the drainage. A couple easy downclimbs will bring you to the first rappel.

Descent[edit]

R1: 25’ off rock pinch hidden below chockstone.

escape is possible LDC just above the next drop.

R2: 35' off cairn anchor. Check it first and be prepared to rebuild. Recommend first person down evaluates R3 natural anchor options before committing and pulling the rope though there is a potential escape (high 4th class) RDC up an exposed face with large holds.

R3: 110’ off boulder. Soft start recommended. If this boulder is eventually washed down canyon, a deadman or sandtrap anchor may be required. Mostly free-hanging rappel. Do not blindly toss rope as there could be hikers below.

R2 & R3 could be combined into one rappel of perhaps 150'+, though it would then be advisable to extend webbing past the edge to minimize friction as the rope will also pass over the lip of R3.

Exit[edit]

Hike Peter’s Canyon trail back to the parking area.
