Introduction[edit]
Tucked away in a remote corner of the wilderness, this single-rappel descent offers a stunning payoff for those willing to bushwhack a bit to reach it. The rappel drops into a pool of bright, electric blue water, so clear and vibrant it feels almost surreal—like stepping into a hidden tropical oasis carved into the forested landscape. Though short in technical complexity, the experience is rich in atmosphere. The descent itself is scenic, framed by moss-covered rock walls and the echo of cascading water. It’s the kind of place that feels untouched and rewards those who seek beauty off the beaten path. This spot also makes for a great alternative entry point to a packrafting route through the Pillars of Hercules if you don't want to do the short loop hike. Be warned: navigation is critical. The packraft exit route is not obvious, and missing the correct exit could turn the day into a dangerous and deadly situation. Take the time to research and plan your exit carefully.
Approach[edit]
Start from where you park your car on the left side (East side) of the road and walk into the bush, stay parallel to the river. You’ll come across a track. Follow it for about 50 meters. Then, take a right turn onto a less obvious track marked with orange tape; this should lead you to the anchor.
Anchor coordinates are listed as -39.17061, 175.80316. When I descended we had to look around and ended up using natural anchors, so be prepare to build your own if needed.
Descent[edit]
Abseil down a 40 m free-hanging drop into the gorge. The pool at the bottom has undercut walls, so aim to land in the center of the river. From here you can float downstream until the wall on the left ends.
If you have a packraft, you can choose to float down the river and enjoy more beautiful scenery. Be absolutely sure you know where to exit—going too far will take you into a highly dangerous section of river that has been fatal in the past.
Exit[edit]
Exit onto the beach on the canyon left before the rapids start, then follow the marked (with ribbons) track back to the top.
Packraft exit - shortly after crossing under some powerlines there was a bright sign that says "Exit Now" or something to that effect. These are the coordinates of where we pulled out and started our exit hike.
-39.13634, 175.82063
You'll head straight west until you hit a road (it is pretty steep for a bit). Follow the road North until you reach your parking spot.
