Introduction[edit]

Great easy canyon with many slides and jumps. The water can be various colors which is pretty amazing.

Approach[edit]

This is in the same drainage as Mordor. It is considered the middle section of the entire canyon. You enter at the top of the first waterfall, just downstream of the exit for Mordor, and finish at the footbridge.

There is a large parking area for many tourists indicated on the map, which is the usual place to park. In 2021, we were allowed by the person living at the gate to the private road, to open the gate and drive up the road a short ways, parking in front of the pink house. This saved about 0.25mi of walking each way.

Descent[edit]

After the entry rappel, continue downstream with slides and jumps in gorgeous water and scenery and a couple more short rappels. It is worth continuing a short ways below the bridge for two additional beautiful pools to jump into. If you do the final pool, it is a little muddy scrambling out the hillside on canyon left and a short rope (10' or so) from above for a handline would help. One person can exit just above that pool and set up the rope, then jump back in with the group.

Unlike in Mordor, which is the upper part of the same drainage, there are bailout points up the hillside for pretty much the entirety of this section and flash flood risk is minimal. Nevertheless, flash floods in this drainage are frequent in the rainy season so be very aware of weather conditions up the mountain.

Exit[edit]

Be sure you exit at the footbridge, unless you brought a very long rope. The section downstream (called Lower Mordor) has an at least 90 meter (possibly 100m per locals) rappel.

Red tape[edit]

You must pay the local owner, named Omar, to hike up their land to access this canyon. The fee was 5,000 colones per person in 2021.

Background[edit]

Originally named by Johan as 'Wo Hen Hao'. However, few locals know it by that name. The members of Toros Canyoning Group call it 'Desagüe Medio' (translation: Middle Drainage). It is named here as 'Mordor Medio', to keep in line with the upper section's name.
