Introduction[edit]

The Mount Greville crack offers a unique abseiling experience through a fissure overlooking Moogerah Dam. Stunning ferns and greenery can be found within the crevice; however, this is paired with a dangerous level of scree. Rockfall is also a concern, especially on the first pulldown.

Approach[edit]

Park at the Mt Greville carpark. Approach can be made three different ways:

  • Ascend Waterfall gorge, at the top existing towards lookout rock, just before the lookout head left up the mountain until reaching the cliff line, turn right at the cliff line. Follow the cliff line to the top of the crack. Then head down to your right to the first abseil tree.
  • Ascend SE Ridge and either traverse right to the top of Waterfall gorge and then follow that route or continue on to the Palm Gorge route
  • Ascend Palm Gorge to the top and then turn left onto the summit route. Follow the route to approximately 100 vertical metres before the summit, there will be a footpad on the right that leads down and around the cliff line. Follow the base of the cliff line down and then back up to the top of the crack. Once at the top of the crack head down to your right to do the first abseil tree.

Descent[edit]

Plan your pulldown on the first rappel well, a fiddle stick can be used with care not to on get it caught on vegetation. Dangerous levels of scree in the crack in all locations. It is best to travel in small groups and only have one person moving at a time. When pulling ropes or when someone is rappelling it is wise to ensure there is no-one directly below due to risk of loose rocks. On most rappels you cannot see the bottom from the top.

  • R1 - 45m from chain around tree
  • R2 - 27m from sling around tree
  • R3 - 29m from ring to double bolts
  • R4 - 20m from ring to double bolts

Exit[edit]

After R4 proceed a short distance down the remainder of the crack, immediately turn right and follow the base of the cliff line back up to a foot pad. Turn left on the foot pad to go down to lookout rock and the top of Waterfall gorge.
