Introduction

Short slot canyon, but with three great rappels in a scenic canyon. One pool knee deep as of June 2017. Last rappel free hang. Beautiful canyon, for a short outing.

Approach

Start at Bangs Canyon trailhead parking area. Hike Tabeguache Trail about 2 miles to southeastern trailhead for Rough Canyon. Hike up Rough Canyon about 1/4 mile above falls. Leave trail and hike south up hill, then head west. Cross Shaylee Birthday Canyon. Hike down to canyon head.

Leave Rough Canyon trail go south uphill: 38.97448,-108.60127

Start of canyon and R1: 38.97217,-108.60573

Descent

R1: 63 feet. Plenty of natural anchors to choose. Juniper on canyon left.

Hike about 50 feet to next rappel.

R2: 25 feet into pool. Anchor off of boulder.

Hike about 75 feet to next rappel.

R3: 42 feet. Anchor off of deadman. Tree or large boulder back from rappel is also available, but will require at least 20-30 feet of webbing. Free hang for about 35 feet. Avoidable poison ivy at start of rappel.
