Introduction[edit]

This is an class 1, non-technical hike that follows Penitentiary Canyon for about 4.25 miles until it meets the Muddy Creek. From there, you turn upstream and follow the Muddy toward Tomsich Butte, enjoying striking canyon walls and desert scenery along the way.

The hike works best with a car shuttle, ending near Tomsich Butte. Without a shuttle, you’ll need to add about 3.6 miles of hiking on dirt roads to return to the starting point.
