Introduction

This canyon has two things going for it - a remarkable cave and a few fun slides. The cave is a very rare opportunity for a canyoneer to see gnarly tuffi sculptures and stalactites. You will need a headlamp to appreciate the stunning inside, which may require a short swim to enter in higher water. The toboggans total about 10 including two notable ones that are roughly 25 feet. There are also a couple jumps about 20 feet and some small ones. The rappels are unremarkable.

Approach

From the town of Lenno, take the easiest way uphill. Park at the church parking lot at 45.97740, 9.18804. Continue up hill on Via San Benedetto on foot past the houses and into the trees. It is steep and affords dramatic views of Lake Como. After about 15 minutes take the trail that veers down left at 45.97790, 9.17685. The trail is easy to track the first 10 minutes then is obscured at a gully. Cross the gully and try to pick up the trail. Continue another 15 minutes on the intermittent trail. Continue contouring until the drop in at 45.98257, 9.1718.

Descent

Starts out with a couple small downclimbs. The third drop can be downclimbed but is sketchy when wet. There was a traverse line in place and anchors for a rappel. A couple jumps are encountered, one about 15 feet. Generally none of the pools are overhead by much so a shallow entry is required on all of them to be safe. After 10 minutes of creek walking a 10’ slide is up and then a 25’ slide. Shortly after these two toboggans some derelict waterworks ruins are found. A short rappel on the right leads to a wonderland of sculpted tuffi and the cave entrance. Put on the headlamp and head inside. After the cave tour observe the ceiling and walls incredible curves. A 30’ rappel on left deposits you at the start of the creek walk to the finish. There are almost continuous downclimbs, jumps, and slides. The is one more 25’ slide in this section.

Exit

After a couple more small slides/jumps a house on the right appears. Exit up the concrete stairs on right at 45.97445, 9.18210. Head down the driveway and veer left to cross the bridge. Stay left to go uphill and then make a right to take a steep cobblestone walkway that heads directly to the church.
