Home of the annual APKanion rendezvous circa 2016. POA airport in Porto Alegre is an 2.5 hour drive. FLP airport in Florianópolis is a 4 hour drive. Malacara Canyon in Sierra Geral National Park is considered by locals as the best canyon in the area.
The geology is basalt. Canyons are characterized by largely open creek drainages with shallow pools and slippery, slimy creek walking. Featuring some quality high-angle and vertical rappels in flow and comprehensive anchors for traverse lines and guided rappels that make this area a joy. It is a good idea to bring a wrench to tighten bolts. There are essentially no plunge pool jumps, no waterslides, and nothing resembling a water park.
