"High flow, cold water and a stunning trip. There was even a cute highlands copperhead in the waterfalls. 1000m of abseiling was hard work though :)

Introduction[edit]

Either an incredibly long day mission or a busy overnight trip.

Most of this gorge is straightforward abseiling with minimal swift-water risk during summer (don't go when thunderstorms are forecast though). There is one narrow crack section with chock-stones that form siphons and undercuts at any level above minimum.

Anchors are a mix of independent double bolts with rap rings, single bolts with rings, 8mm accessory cord threads, pitons, and natural protection.

Approach[edit]

Walk to Dixons Falls, you are now 20m from the first abseil.

Descent[edit]

Take 2x 80m of rope.

Dixon's falls is a two drop abseil, followed by about 300m of stream-way boulder hopping during which about 150m of elevation is lost, with increasing steepness.

The next 800m is mostly either very exposed downclimbing or abseiling. The longest abseils are just a smidge shorter than 80m.

There is one narrow crack section with chock-stones that form siphons and undercuts at any level above minimum. This is at about R6-R7.

There is one river junction of note, where south buffalo creek enters from the right. This is four abseils before the end.

Exit[edit]

Follow the river downstream up to the mini-gorge at which it's just a small walk up the bank to the road. There is an old goldmining race that sourced water from the river which makes for easier walking on the right bank after about 1km.
