Introduction[edit]
A rugged canyon with two big rappels hidden along the outskirts of the Sierra Ancha Wilderness. The technical section is short but scenic and committing. Run the canyon under flowing conditions for the optimal experience.
This canyon can be completed by setting up a shuttle off Cherry Creek road or by fixing and ascending ropes. Both options require comparable time (car-to-car), but the shuttle adds an additional 1.5h to 2.5h of driving total.
Approach[edit]
Take the 288 to Cherry Creek Rd (FR 203) and park a vehicle at the shuttle location. 4x4, high clearance, and good tires recommended. There are many loose, sharp rocks on the section of road that descends from Board Tree Saddle, and worn, thin rubber will be susceptible to puncture. The quality of the road improves as it flattens out about 2 miles from the shuttle parking.
Shuttle road should take 30-45 minutes (starting from Juniper Flat).
Return to the 288 and turn left onto a forest road near Juniper Flat Tank. In wet conditions, the road may require 4x4. Otherwise, the roads should be accessible to a standard crossover (passenger vehicles may be unable to cross the rut on the side of the 288). Park at the referenced pin and hike along the road about 15 minutes or continue driving if possible and park where the road comes closest to the drainage. Enter the drainage and follow it to the head of the canyon.
Descent[edit]
The first obstacle is a series of shelves that can be easily downclimbed under most conditions. The canyon then cuts abruptly through the earth exposing impressive quartzite walls.
R1: 130’ off a tree, or bolts high Canyon Right. If ascending back out, prepare to pad a few edges on this rappel as the rope makes multiple points of contact with the rock.
The first rappel is followed by a few easy downclimbs through a short but scenic section of canyon.
R2: 150’ off bolts Canyon Left. Mostly free-hanging.
Exit[edit]
Gear down at the base of the second rappel and prepare to downclimb and boulder hop back to Cherry Creek Rd and to the shuttle vehicle.
Alternatively, return up canyon by ascending ropes.
