Introduction[edit]
The hike to the Grottos, some narrow slot canyons that have some cave-like sections that require headlamp.
Approach[edit]
The trailhead begins exactly 5 miles past the Painted Canyon sign on Hwy 195, turn right at the tall signpost marked Sheep Hole Oasis and park agains the mud hill just off the road.
Descent[edit]
The Grottos were formed by water action as well as earth movement in the sandstone, mud hills of the Orocopia Montain Wilderness. To enter one of the caves you will have to crawl on your knees and enter through a narrow opening for a few feet until you are able to stand. You will need a headlamp or flashlight to enter the caves. Gloves and knee pads are also suggested as well as plenty of water.
Exit[edit]
You have the option to return back the way you came or take the loop route, which provides great views of the Salton Sea and the Santa Rosa Mountains.
