Introduction[edit]

Canyon coordinates need to be verified

Quality

  • The canyon is rated 2 out of 10 on the Brennan Quality Scale.
  • David Noble rates the canyon 2 out of 5 for quality and Medium for difficulty.

Approach[edit]

Two options:

  • Natural Bridge / Mount Cameron fire trail. Park at Natural Bridge, walk the overgrown Mt Cameron Fire Trail, then navigate with map and compass into Thunderstorm Creek.
  • Mount Galah / Closet Canyon. Park at Mount Galah, the same parking place as Breakfast Creek/Closet Canyon/Galah Canyon. Either descend Closet Canyon or use Closet's exit route. From the bottom of Closet Canyon, walk 200m downstream down Rocky Creek to the mouth of Thunderstorm canyon. Climb the nose of the ridge, the hardest section is the first 5m.

Descent[edit]

Exit[edit]

Two typical exits:

  • Exit up the western nose of the Thunderstorm/Rocky Creek junction, with a challenging 5m climb at the bottom. This option leads to the Mount Cameron fire trail and Natural Bridge.
  • Use the Closet Canyon exit to return to Mount Galah and the Rocky Creek Road.

Red tape[edit]

The canyon is in Wollemi National Park, alerts can be found on the NPWS website: https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/wollemi-national-park/local-alerts

Background[edit]

First recorded descent 20 November 1977 by David Noble, Bob Sault & Robin Owens. Photos of the first descent can be seen on this page: http://www.david-noble.net/canyoning/wolgan/wolgancanyons2.html

David Noble says: visited on a joint SUBW - Ramblers trip on 20 Nov 77. The party was Bob Sault and Dave Noble (SUBW), Bruce Bowers, Ian Crawford, Robin Owens and Chris Neilson (Ramblers). A thunderstorm took place whilst they were rigging up the ropes on the first pitch. (Kameruka Magazine Vol 16 No 2 - July 78).
