Introduction

This page covers all of Tuckup Canyon, a beautiful canyon - the Mauv is definitely the highlight, but the soaring walls in the Redwall are also special.

Approach

Most hikers will drive to the Schmutz Spring trailhead. Follow a well-worn trail down into Tuckup wash just above the Supai layer. However, the vast majority of visitors are rafters approaching from the Colorado river.

Descent

Many consider this a walk-down canyon, but there are some minor technical challenges:

  • Supai = A walk-down with a few easy boulder jumbles to navigate through/around.
  • Redwall = an awkward large chockstone near the top, difficulty dependent on how much gravel is scoured away underneath.
  • An easy climb about 30 yards up-canyon of the conglomerate bridge.
  • Mauv = a couple of climbs past large chockstones, 1 of which has a loose and exposed bypass walking route to avoid the climb and wade.

Exit

Most hikers will exit by walking back up Tuckup with a couple of climbs past chockstones in the Mauv Limestone and the Redwall Limestone - difficulty is dependent on how much of the floor has been scoured away under the chockstones. It's possible to exit out Cottonwood to the Esplanade and Tuckup Trail. River rafters continue down the Colorado. Rarely, hikers will continue to the Colorado and exit Stairway Canyon.

Red tape

Within Grand Canyon National Park. A permit is required at all times. For overnight stays, the use-area is LB9 Boysag.

Also, on the Kanab plateau, an America The Beautiful annual pass is required to enter the park boundary.
