Introduction
Also known as Typhon 4.
Very scenic polished sections of canyon that seem to be more extensive than in most Death Valley canyons.
Approach
Top-down option (car shuttle needed): Park at Dantes View. Hike north along trail to Mount Perry, then down a ridge that is hard on people's knees to a wash. Hike down the wash into the technical part of the canyon.
Bottom-up (no car shuttle needed): Provided by Scott Swaney: [We] did a new variation on the approach by starting from the bottom and hiking up to the canyon. This instead of the usual car shuttle arrangement and start from Dante's View. The approach from the top is 3.9 miles down, and the hike up from the bottom is uphill for 2.4 miles and an approach time of three hours, and avoiding any car shuttle time lost & effort. Better option for fit canyoneers and cuts a lot of total time & expense down. The map shows both variations.
Descent
The canyon is currently (Feb 2024) setup with 19 rappels, but a couple of the rappels can be downclimbed. There are some really good sized drops in the canyon with an ample amount of downclimbing between rappels. Current anchor setup includes cairns, multiple rock chocks, one nut, and even a bomber knot chock. Below is a description of a handful of the more notable rappels:- Rap 6 - 200' (cairn)
- Rap 9 - 110' (2-stage, off of a pinch 20' back from the edge)
- Rap 11 - 130' (chute for the first 20')
- Rap 19 - 30' (at the exit, rock chock)
